Go Skateboarding Day, June 21
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Go Skateboarding Day Web Site Goes Live With Events From Around The Globe. Go Skateboarding Day is Declared an Official Holiday in Cities Across the US
Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. – May 25, 2006 – The International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) is proud to announce that the Go Skateboarding Day web site has gone live! This community web site, www.goskateboardingday.org, allows skateboarders from around the world to post their Go Skateboarding Day events and promotions to be held on or around June 21st. In cities from Gothenburg, Sweden to San Diego, California skateboarders are using the sites special ‘Do It Yourself’ features that contain all the tools needed to create and promote an event celebrating the annual holiday. Highlights of the site include video from 2005 events and surveys that show what skateboarders are backing this week. The ‘featured event’ of the week showcases the event with the most potential for shredding and the best graphics to go along with it.
The web site is a project of the IASC which founded the holiday three years ago and continues to promote it’s growth by connecting the skateboarding community through communication with members, the industry, media, and skateboarders by developing new outlets for information including the newly launched web site.
Support for skateboarders and their holiday has been exceptionally strong in cities such as Lake Forest, California, Hampton, Virginia, and Russellville, Arkansas where the mayor of each town has declared June 21st official ‘Go Skateboarding Day.’ “With the global growth of skateboarding over the last 5 years, it’s in the best interest of their community for government officials to support their skateboarders.” Says John Bernards, Executive Director of IASC “Skateboarders are creative, athletic, and passionate people and those who are not already old enough, will become active, voting members of their community in the future.”
Some of the most inspiring and exciting events currently posted on goskateboardingday.org range from the Colonial Beach, Virginia rally for a new skatepark, to Denver Colorado, where skateboarding has been introduced in classrooms, and Colorado Skate University will hold a contest and lessons at the Denver Skatepark. In Chicago, Illinois Emerica footwear will unite skateboarders to support Chicago Skateboarding Organization's efforts to create the first downtown skate plaza in a major U.S. metropolitan area. In addition to new events being posted, the web site has daily giveaways and promotions such as the full day of skateboard programming on Fuel TV and ramp giveaways from Freshpark.
Go Skateboarding Day originated as the day for skateboarders to have fun, to raise awareness about the issues we face, to show the world what skateboarding is really all about, to reclaim our culture and to define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence it continues to be. In the three years since that first celebration, the holiday continues to grow, but the mission remains the same: Have fun, go skateboarding!
