About IASC
The International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) is the not-for-profit trade association of skateboarding. The mission of the IASC is to represent the global skateboarding community as a united force by listening, understanding and acting on the needs of skateboarders and the skateboard industry.
IASC’s goals are to promote skateboarding, increase participation, save its members money, and educate. IASC serves it’s members and the skateboarding community by focusing on areas which affect not only the business but the overall sustainability and health of skateboarding.
Formed in 1995, IASC is a diverse group of skateboard manufacturers, distributors, contest organizers, private skateparks, and individuals. A collaboration of people passionate about skateboarding- with the single aim of protecting the integrity of skateboarding and pushing skateboarding forward on a global level.
Committees
IASC committees are directed by board members and staffed with volunteers who help IASC in its mission to Push Skateboarding Forward. Each committee is dedicated to promoting, skateboarding increasing participation, saving members money and education.
- Retail Relations Committee
- Chairmen, Bod Boyle & Glenn Brumage
- Works to increase relationships and create mutually beneficial goals for skateboarding by serving as a conduit for manufacturers and retailers.
- Research and Education Committee
- Chairmen, Glenn Brumage
- Focuses on educating those involved in the skateboard community through seminars, think-tanks, and both primary and secondary research.
- Skatepark Committee
- Chairman, Per Welinder
- Campaigns for more and well-designed skateboard parks. Works with both public and private skateparks.
- Youth Participation Committee
- Chairman, Jamey Stone
- Focuses it’s efforts on sustaining and increasing participation by getting more young people involved in skateboarding and current skateboarders to continue advancing.
- Events and Fundraising Committee
- Chairman, Steve Van Doren
- Creates events that raise awareness, fulfill IASC’s mission and raise funds for the organization and the Go Skateboarding Foundation.
- Trade Shows Committee
- Chairman, Tod Swank
- Works with the industry for the most beneficial gathering for the sales & promotion of skateboarding products.
- Branding and Promotions Committee
- Chairman, Don Brown
- Creates strategic outlets for communication and promotion of IASC and for skateboarding both with the skateboard industry and non-endemic communities.
- Political Advocacy Committee
- Chairman, Roger Harrell
- Works with City and State governments and other organizations for favorable laws and regulations affecting skateboarding and skateparks.
- Amateur Competition Committee
- Chairman, George Powell
- Promotes and sanctions amateur competitions in the USA with the goal of a true US National Amateur Championship governed by the skateboard industry.
How Big Is The Industry?
Board-Trac tracks annual sales volume for 2004 at $5.2 billion. Board-Trac surveys the consumer (skateboarders). For more information and methodology visit Board-Trac.
The recently released Leisure Trends Group report shows the core skate retail industry at about $2.41 billion (surf is $2.46 billion). A “Core” retailer, as defined in the report, excludes sporting goods stores, department stores such Macy’s and chains such as Pac Sun. But no matter how you look at it, the skate segment is on the rise.
Skateboard Parks
IASC is committed to helping skateboard communities help themselves. The most successful skatepark projects have been lead by skateboarders or local skateboard shops.
